Few modern fragrances have achieved the cultural reach of Sauvage Cologne, and Dior's blend of Calabrian bergamot and pepper at the top explains part of why it became such an inescapable men's release. Lavender, Sichuan pepper, pink pepper, elemi, vetiver, patchouli and geranium build a properly complex, aromatic centre for this eau de toilette, herbal and spiced in a way that rewards closer attention. Ambroxan, cedar and labdanum close the composition, the ambroxan in particular responsible for the fragrance's famously strong projection and long wear time. Sauvage Eau de Toilette suits nearly any occasion, from the office to evening plans, which explains its widespread adoption as a signature scent. Dior's marketing certainly helped popularize Sauvage, though the composition itself deserves credit too, for balancing citrus against synthetic musk so effectively. Anyone curious why Sauvage remains a bestseller should try it once, if only to understand the reference point so many newer fragrances measure themselves against.
